In more recent years, our health agents have been able to reach these far communities by motorcycle. There are no clear well defined roads, and they can be dangerous at times when it rains. During the week of UCLA’s visit; we screened all patients for diabetes in the clinic and in 3 remote areas. Our mobile health team took motorcycles to remote areas called Allium and Volant. During the 3 remote clinic visits we screened more than 400 people, treated all children for intestinal parasites and provided basic medical care. We even got to meet a 110 year old woman in excellent health! We will all treasure the memories and experience we made during that week! We would like to thank Hugues Desgranges, the Executive Director for orchestrating the weekly events as well as HGD’s health agent Alfred Sanon, who worked with the community to prepare for our visits. We’d also like to thank our volunteers Joe and Lauren for conducting the diabetes screening and our photographer Tina who captured all the amazing moments.

For the third year, Dr. David Cutler of UCLA led a team of volunteers to work at the HGD Foundation clinic and EVL! We are eternally thankful to all the volunteers who spent one week tirelessly treating patients, and working with our students! We also want to thank all of our supporters who helped make this trip possible, with your continued support we treated on average 200 patients per day, screened more than 500 people for diabetes- taught our students nursery rhymes and songs in English, and created arts and crafts projects! A special thank you to Elizabeth Tinglof for volunteering to capture all of the special moments through photograph.

Below is Dr. David Cutler’s first blog entry, which I would like to share with our supporters!

What a day!!
We were all  ready to leave our house at 7:45 am today. Our driver was delayed so we all piled into HGD Foundation Executive Director Hugue Desgranges’ pick-up truck for the 4 km drive to the clinic. Upon arrival we realized that most of the clinic staff and patients were unaware of the weekend transition to Daylight Saving Time. This was understandable since it was the first time in 10 years Haiti had made the change.
But as the morning wore on, and everyone got up to speed, we were soon overwhelmed by over 200 patients having signed in to be seen. And by 6 pm when we left the clinic they had all been seen.
Perhaps the most sobering encounter was the 4 week old twins, born at home, whose first medical visit found the first-born a robust 7 lbs 8 oz. The second-born was a pale, frail 4-pounder gasping for every breath. He was immediately transferred to the local hospital.
But there were many bright moments, like when we were re-united with the young boy we had met two years ago suffering from severe rickets and malnutrition. As you can see in the picture, he looks great now!
Tonight the team is exhausted. And while last night we were out in the town streets participating in the Ra-Ra celebration, everyone retired early tonight to prepare for another gruelling day tomorrow.
We gave away many of the supplies we brought, and also set up a voucher system for patients to utilize the local pharmacy whom we would reimburse with funds provided by our donors to the HGD Foundation. Every little bit helps.

Our 2nd school being constructed in collaboration with ICA Japan, in the rural area of Allium is nearing completion!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters for their commitment to the HGD Foundation and Ecole Village Lucina ! We would like to first thank both The Canaan Ridge School  of Connecticut and the C.O.O.L School of Malibu California, for their tremendous contribution and efforts in supporting EVL. With their help, students have received school uniforms and school supplies for the 2010 scholastic year and also summer of  2011!

We would also like to thank International Medical Health Organization for supporting our efforts in shipping an Ambulance for HGD Medical Center-with their support, we have been able to provide the people of Petit Goave with medical emergency care and transport.

HGD thanks Peter Schweitzer and Robert Reifel  of Plenty.org for their generous contribution in supporting the purchase and shipping of the ambulance to Haiti, which has been able to provide the people of Petit Goave the emergency care they need.

HGD Medical Center has partnered with:

Medicos del Mundo or Medecins du Monde Spain to provide a Cholera Treatment Center (CTC), which is the only CTC in Petit Goave, providing 24 hour care for cholera victims.

Samaritan Purse, has been providing prenatal classes for 30 women, 4 days a week- focusing on nutrition and health.

PROFAMIL has partnered with HGDF, to provide training of HGD staff and supplies for family planning, including contraception and family planning counseling.

Japan Platform and ICA Japan has started construction of a new permanent school, which is currently being constructed. Japanese architects who specialize in designing anti seismic structures, visited Haiti to oversee the designing and plan. With their input and approval, the school is scheduled to be finished February 2011!
